Lynchburg Campground Review

KOA Campground, Lynchburg, Virginia

We recently had a chance to get away and go camping for 3 nights. We decided that we didn’t want to drive farther than about 2 hours, this is mainly due to gas costs while hauling our travel trailer. I have an app. on my phone which shows a map of RV campgrounds all over the United States, it’s called “Park Advisor”(RV Parks & Campgrounds), it can be downloaded from Google play. It really comes in handy! I have used it while traveling out of state too! We usually like to go to KOA Campgrounds because they are for the most part, nice & clean places, with easy drive-thru sites. We have the KOA Kard which gives us 10% off of camping fees. The Lynchburg, Virginia area sounded interesting to us and it’s close to the Blue Ridge Parkway so that’s what we chose! The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most beautiful drives in North Carolina & Virginia! We chose Lynchburg/Blue Ridge Parkway KOA.

KOA Office

The Campground Office

It’s very easy to look up the campsites online and see what’s available for certain dates, then I called to confirm and paid the downpayment, which was equal to one night’s stay. I decided it was a good opportunity to purchase the KOA Value Kard, which costs $30 for the year and gives us 10% off on camping fees as well as other perks. We packed up the camper, loaded our dog(Poppie) in the truck, and headed down the road. Check-in was 2:00 and we arrived at about 2:45. It always takes longer when hauling our camper. It was an easy drive for us! The campground is actually about 20 miles northwest of Lynchburg, very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, in Monroe, Virginia. Our first impression was that it was smaller than some other KOA campgrounds(which is good) and had lots of trees, which we love! Shaded sites can make a BIG difference on hot summer days!

Our Camper-Gulfstream Conquest

Here we are all set up on our site! We purchased a Gulfstream Conquest travel trailer last year. We have not been able to go camping as much as we would like, but I feel like 2020 is our year! The reason we bought it was to fulfill our “future dream” of living part-time in our camper and traveling the country. We will be nearing retirement age in the not-too-distant future and hope to make this dream a reality.

Our faithful companion

Another great reason to buy a camper is to travel with your pets. We have always had to board our dog, Poppie when we travel. Camping gives us an opportunity to bring him along, not to mention the HUGE savings on kennel fees! I think he is going to love it!

Large Campsites

It was very quiet and each site had a fire pit(with a cooking grill) and a picnic table. The table was in great condition! We have been to many places where you don’t dare sit on the picnic table! As you can see from the photos, they have outlined each site with rocks which is a great idea! This keeps everything neat and you know exactly where your site ends and the next one begins. Since we are having trouble with our hot water heater, I had to use their showers. The bathhouse has 8 doors, 4 on each side, inside you, have your own room with a toilet, sink, and shower. I have never seen a bathhouse like this, but it worked great and they were very clean! They have a pool and a playground for the kids.

Pool and Playground

It looked like a really nice pool area! I should have looked at the amenities beforehand, I would have been in that pool in a second! I love swimming!

The playground area looked pretty cool! We no longer have small children but I think most would really have fun there!

KOA Cabins

A lot of KOA campgrounds have cabins you can rent, this one did as well. You can check out their website to find out the rates KOA Cabins

Blue Ridge Mountains

Blue Ridge Mountains & James River

It’s always nice to stay in an area that has places to explore! The Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful drive through Virginia and North Carolina, with many scenic overlooks to stop at, as well as lakes, waterfalls, and parks.

We highly recommend this campground! Keep in mind that it is about 30 minutes from any town so come prepared. If you want more information on the campground or on the phone app., send me an email or comment below. I will be reviewing more campgrounds in the coming months. Please come back!
